Quick ST II Demo
================
(C) 1990 Branch Always Software.
The Quick ST II Demo is a free demo available to the public which
demonstrates the capabilities of the new Quick ST II software. The
files contained in the ARC file QST2DEMO.ARC must not be altered,
and all the files must be copied when redistributing the demo.
The demo may be installed on any Atari ST, Mega ST, or Atari STe
computer and used for demonstation purposes. Atari dealers may install
the demo on their store machines, and give out copies of the demo.
Quick ST II has a list price of $19.95 U.S. or $22.95 Canadian, and is
available at Atari ST dealers throughout North America. It can also
be ordered directly from Branch Always Software. Credit card orders
are accepted.
Installation
------------
The Quick ST II Demo consists of 3 main files, which demonstrate 2 of
the 5 main features of Quick ST II. The other features are described
in the file QUICKST2.DOC.
The main files are:
QST2DEMM.PRG - monochrome demo version of Quick ST 2.0
QST2DEMC.PRG - color demo version of Quick ST 2.0
QST2CSTD.PRG - Quick ST II Desktop Customizer Demo
(can be renamed to QST2CSTD.ACC to run as a desk accessory)
There are additional files which are not critical for running the demo:
INSTALL.DOC - this file
QUICKST2.DOC - the Quick ST II press release explaining all features
*.QFL - there will be several files with the .QFL extender.
These are sample fill pattern files.
To run this demo, follow these steps:
- format a blank floppy disk
- copy the file QST2CSTD.PRG to the floppy disk
- using the New Folder command, create a folder called AUTO
- copy the files QST2DEMM.PRG and QST2DEMC.PRG to the AUTO folder
- shut off the computer
- turn the computer on
Hard disk users may skip the formatting step, and copy the files directly
to the C: partition.
If you have both color and monochome monitors, the correct version of
Quick ST will automatically install. There is no need to rename files.
If you do not have both color and monochrome monitors, then it is only
necessary to copy ONE of the files (QST2DEMM.PRG or QST2DEMC.PRG) to the
AUTO folder, depending on which monitor you have.
This demo does NOT support the Moniterm monitor. The non-demo version of
Quick ST II fully supports the Moniterm and other high resolution monitors.
Using the demo
--------------
Quick ST 2.0 will put a prompt up on the screen. Just press any key to
continue booting. A few seconds later, the desktop will be drawn. If the
desktop comes up in low resolution, please switch to medium resolution.
On a monochrome monitor, it will always boot up in the correct resolution.
The non-demo does not require this key press. It is intended only to
inform the user that they are running the demo version.
The two features of Quick ST II that are demonstrated in this demo are:
- Quick ST II speeds up GEM, text, and screen scrolling.
- Quick ST II supports background fill patterns and pictures
Please note that this demo is SLOWER than the real version of Quick ST II
which must be purchased. The demo is about 30%-50% slower, but it still
provides a noticable speed increase on the computer.
Quick ST II will speed up most text editors, spreadsheet programs,
desktop publishing programs, terminal programs, word processors, and
just about any other GEM based or text based program. The amount of the
increase will vary from program to program, and don't forget, that this
is a SLOWER demo. The performance using the non-demo will be faster.
Instead of the usual green or gray background, Quick ST II will display
its own background picture. This background picture can be changed by
running the Desktop Customizer program (QST2CSTD.PRG).
When the Desktop Customizer is run, a dialog box is drawn, with several
menus on the left, a 16x16 grid in the middle, and color selectors on
the right. The grid is for editing the background fill pattern.
On the left, the menu options are labeled:
Save Custom Fill
Load Custom Fill
Load Desktop Picture
Save Defaults
Normal Background
Fill Background
Picture Background
Click on Normal Background. The background picture is replaced by a
green or gray background.
Now click on Fill Background. This replaces the green or gray background
with the fill pattern that is currently being edited in the grid. To
edit the pattern, simply select one of the 4 colors and click inside the
grid. To update the background, click on the rectangle to the right of
the grid.
The Desktop Customizer can load in any medium resolution or monochrome
DEGAS picture. First, click on Picture Background. Now click on
Load Desktop Picture. You must have some DEGAS pictures already.
To load one of the fill patterns provided with this demo, click on
Load Custom Fill and select any of the files that end in .QFL.
Note that some fill pattern files which are intended for use on a color
monitor may not load properly on a monochrome monitor. Most of the
fill patterns provided are compatible with both monochrome and color.
The Save options are disabled in the demo. That means that it is not
possible to save a fill pattern, or configure Quick ST II to use a
different background picture when booting.
The non-demo version of Quick ST II uses only 20K of memory. When a
custom background picture is installed, this uses an additional 32K.
The non-demo can have this option turned on and off. This demo will
always have a background picture installed, so it uses just over 50K.
We hope that you enjoy the Quick ST II Demo. We apologize for having to
cripple it, but the sooner you buy Quick ST II, the sooner you can
enjoy all of its benefits.
For more information about Quick ST II, please read the file QUICKST2.DOC.
